My Career Background
I have been fortunate enough to have spent over 52 years of my wonderful life at sea; together with my magical wife Bernadette and family, I have had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful people across the globe who are now close friends. My journey began as a Deck Cadet in South Africa, where I proudly served in the Merchant Navy, eventually taking on my first Master's position. I went on to command the world's largest container ships and, more recently, I have enjoyed captaining cruise ships for over 25 years.
Since retirement, it is my passion to share my many diverse memories and experiences from my life at sea, including destination insights and knowledge, through maritime talks. As Captain Derrick Kemp, I have lectured on several cruise ships during voyages across the world and regularly conduct nautical talks across North West England for societies, clubs, and larger organizations. I have also had the honor of being invited to present awards at ceremonies and events, which I take great pride in supporting.
This work gives me the chance to give something back in support of all seafarers across the world!
On the 12th of November 2020, I was honored to be awarded the State Award for services to maritime careers and training, receiving the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service. This state award recognizes men and women who demonstrate exceptional devotion to duty, exemplary service, and serve as an example to others. I feel very proud and humbled to receive such a prestigious award.

As Captain Derrick Kemp, it is my passion to share my diverse experiences gathered from my time in the merchant navy and on various cruise ships. I bring exciting and enjoyable maritime talks directly to varied audiences, featuring authentic self-made presentations that include personal photos I have collected throughout the years. All professional PowerPoint presentations last approximately 45 - 60 minutes. The duration of the talk can be adjusted to fit your time-slot, after which I am always open to answering any questions from the audience upon completion of the talk.
Reasonable charges are available upon booking request and include my travel expenses: From only £40+
Full equipment is provided (computer, projector, and HDMI connection cable to large screen TVs). You only require a screen or a blank wall!

From my early trainee days as a Deck Cadet in the merchant navy, through to commanding my first container ships as Master, and now, as Captain Derrick Kemp, I find great joy in leading historic cruise liners across the globe during my maritime talks and cruise ship talks.
